Are you sure you are getting Optimized?

Seen from one perspective, albeit a traditional one, The “Search Engine Optimization” is a relatively new phenomenon, considering that its rudimentary origins appear somewhere in the mid 90’s. Remember, it was in 1996 Herman Tumurcuoglu, invented the first commercial meta- search engine, optimizing the results from all the search engines into a single tool.

But in the busy life of the internet where even a day makes a difference, a decade plus some years are more like an eternity. It is not surprising then that in the rough and tumble world of internet dynamics, the very concept of SEO has now spawned into a megalomaniac cottage industry where every geek is raring to outgun its opponent. And, of course, almost every e-business is searching for that right geek, or a group of them, armed with the right algorithm, to bring e-businesses to the front page of search engines that matter.

The unbridled growth of e-commerce forecasted to run into 120 billion plus dollars by 2008 is spiraling into a no holds barred wrestle mania meant for e-businesses to duel it out and reach closest to the front page of popular search engines in order to thrive, and even to survive. For their part, the SEO service providers realizing that SEO services are much in demand have elected to jumping into the fray, with promises to catapult a website from oblivion to near the top. They are armed with solutions and complex algorithmic formulae to put e-businesses within the parameters of the short attention span of e-commerce consumers.

This all sounds innocent enough: simply a demand and supply equation. But a more careful inspection reveals, as was perhaps expected, a good number of SEO providers are simply duds, or even charlatans. Either that, or they are the ones not savvy enough to grasp the right algorithmic formulae and techniques essential in the delivering of the promised high search engine rankings.

So what should an e-business do when it is virtually dependent on the search engine ranking for its very survival?

(In my next feed, I will be giving some key tips that may be used by e-businesses to find the right SEO provider to position their products or services.)
